Career Forum Oct 2016 highlights: Past and present HK Electric graduate trainees shared their experiences

Four HK Electric engineers who went through the company’s Graduate Trainee (GT) programme, together with one current GT, shared their insight with the forum during a topical seminar entitled “Your Success, Our Future”.

The structured two- or three-year GT programme seeks to harness the skills of graduates who have majored in electrical, electronics, mechanical and civil engineering, supporting them with invaluable rotational assignments.

Chan Sheung, an engineer in the transmission and distribution division under the construction and maintenance department – central area section, recalled joining HK Electric a decade ago.

“The 18-month rotational training gave me experience in various departments, followed by six months stationed in a business operation,” he said. “Based on my interests and strengths, my overall knowledge of operations continued to grow. Moreover, the mentorship programme really boosted my skill set, as my mentor gave me a lot of valuable advice and taught me how to adapt to the company culture.”

Eva Li, who joined HK Electric this year and is the newest GT, works for the group commercial division under the group supplies department – process and inventory control section. She said that she has always looked for work-life balance in choosing her career path.

“Before joining, I really envied a relative of mine who also works at HK Electric,” she said. “The company provides lots of different after-work activities and he is always getting involved in them.”

Alice Tam graduated in 2010 and is now an environmental engineer in the corporate development division – environmental affairs department. She happily recounted how she devotes her time to HK Electric’s volunteer team.

“For example, we visit elderly people who live alone and who hesitate to seek help when they encounter problems. I also take part in company activities like yoga and cooking.”

HK Electric is eager to attract graduates who are passionate about engineering and want to grow into future leaders. Applicants require good analytical and interpersonal skills, and a strong motivation to learn.

Sandy Ng, the company’s HR services manager, said that by gaining exposure to different business operations, GTs build a useful network across the company. They also get to attend a series of management training courses to enhance their personal effectiveness, communication, teamwork and customer service skills.

“In addition, they acquire engineering knowledge such as project design and management, tender evaluation, construction, operation, and maintenance in connection with the generation, trans-mission and distribution of electricity.”
