Chen named Barclays Greater China market head

HONG KONG: The wealth and investment management arm of Barclays has appointed Carol Chen as overall market head of its Greater China business.

Chen was previously the market head of the Greater China desk in Singapore. She will now also oversee the Hong Kong-based team. Currently based in Singapore, she will relocate to Hong Kong in October this year.

Since joining the organisation in 2011 to establish the Greater China desk in Singapore, Chen has built up a strong team of bankers and deepened Barclays’ penetration of the high- and ultra-high net worth across the region.

In less than two years, the Greater China desk in Singapore has become a significant contributor towards its North Asia business.

“[Chen] has been instrumental in growing our Greater China business. While Hong Kong has been a key offshore centre for many Greater China clients, she has established a highly successful desk in Singapore to complement our offering in Hong Kong,” said Didier von Daeniken, head of wealth management, Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa.

“She has a deep understanding of the needs of the wealthy across the region, and brings with her the expertise to help clients further grow, manage and pass on their wealth amid volatile markets and an increasing complex operating environment,” he added.

Chen’s appointment further reinforces Barclays’ focus on internal promotion as well as grooming of its talent. Currently, a third of its directors and managing directors are female.
