Golden opportunity for change
Candidates will be spared from having to send their resumes to the companies in advance. Instead, they will speak with recruiters face-to-face, impressing them on the spot and securing the chance for a formal interview.
Isabella Tam, regional manager for human resources at California Fitness, says the company is looking for fitness consultants, fitness professionals and corporate accounts managers.
Fitness consultants, who sell new memberships and maintain relationships with clients, should be excellent communicators with a passion for sport. Tam says good performers may be promoted to become assistant sales managers of a club in eight months to a year, and could eventually become the general manager of a club.
Fitness professionals - the starting point for a personal trainer - may also be promoted to a club general manager. Tam says candidates who are keen to join the company as a corporate accounts manager should have a degree in business, marketing, sports science or sports administration. At least five years of experience in corporate or business-to-business sales and a good sales track record is also required.
Barry Fung, executive director for marketing at Aeon, says the company hopes to meet candidates from different backgrounds at the "Job Speed Dating" event, adding that experience in the banking or credit card sectors will be a bonus. Aeon is looking to fill positions in sales and marketing, and information technology (IT). Fung advises candidates to dress appropriately and be articulate when speaking to recruiters.
"They should introduce their background clearly, including where they studied and worked," he says.
"Even if they didn't do too well, say, in the HKCEE [Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination], they shouldn't lie or hide that piece of information."
Brett Ireland, branch manager for Hong Kong at Drake International, says candidates should not be afraid to talk to people, and should do some research to find out about the participating companies.
Drake is hiring staff to specialise in recruitment in banking and finance, and IT and engineering. Ireland is looking for candidates with at least a few years of work experience and who have a good sales background and knowledge of the industries. Experience in the recruitment field is not necessary. He adds that Drake provides training and offers "intrinsic benefits", such as a work-life balance, and the opportunity to work abroad.
