Hotel hiring across all sectors

For the Christmas and New Year season, Hong Kong can expect an  influx of visitors keen to make the most of their holidays by staying in upscale hotels.

Anticipating that, the Island Shangri-La Hong Kong is taking on recruits in all departments, including food and beverage (F&B), rooms, front office, housekeeping and security.

Applicants interested in the F&B service training position must have at least five years' experience with a proven level of coaching skills.

The appointee will be responsible for mentoring F&B colleagues and ensuring there are appropriate training programmes. "We have about 10 F&B sections if you include all the restaurants and the banquet team," says Kenneth Wai, area director of human resources at the Island Shangri-La. "The new joiner will oversee training for about 200 people, which is why we need a seasoned professional with experience."

All new recruits will attend a three-day orientation programme, during which they will learn about the company's background, structure and culture, and will have an overnight stay to experience the quality of service expected. Each employee has a list of tasks to master within the probation period. Evaluations and role-plays on aspects of customer service help to ensure they can perform to the standards required.

"Candidates should have initiative, an eye for detail and the right attitude to deliver service. All the skills can be trained, provided people enjoy working in this sector and want to help others."
