It’s been a roller-coaster ride for the travel industry in the past couple of years. But after the financial crisis, the recruitment trend in the sector has picked up, with most organisations aggressively re-hiring staff.
The tragic events in Japan in March took away some of the momentum in the succeeding months, but most companies are now hiring according to their 2011budget.
The industry has always been about the personal touch. The advent of technology has improved efficiency but it has not taken away jobs. Lowcost carriers and online travel agents have changed the booking behaviour of consumers, but this development has only created career opportunities that make the industry more appealing to Generation Y candidates.
Social media is definitely playing an ever-increasing role in the recruitment process and more and more employers have come to realise the benefits it offers beyond traditional recruitment channels, particularly with the Generation Y demographics.
The travel industry’s weakness is its inability to compete with other sectors in terms of salary. But it also has a new source of strength, as candidates opt for companies and careers that provide them with work-life balance.
