Responsibilities:

 Strategy

  • Develop and execute AkilahNet and the Akilah Institute’s brand strategy for audiences in North America, Asia, and East Africa
  • Develop and produce the communications strategy and materials for fundraising initiatives worldwide
  • Generate online content that engages global audience segments and leads to measurable action


Marketing

  • Develop graphics, web, and printed collateral to be on message with broader strategic goals
  • Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including newsletters, brochures, annual report, and website
  • Work with the North America based Development team by creating fundraising materials and collateral
  • Work with the East Africa based Admissions team by creating marketing materials for prospectivestudents


Website & Digital Products

  • Manage the website and blog, ensuring that new and consistent information is posted regularly
  • Determine web development priorities, detail project scope, and project manage web deliverables
  • Manage email marketing, determine email calendar, create layouts, and write email copy
  • Track, measure, and report on audience engagement with website, email, and social media


Press and Media

  • Maintain a proactive posture about current news and events in Akilah issue areas and conduct regular media monitoring to identify potential media targets and generate story ideas and/or news to share with supporters
  • Write op-ed pieces and help develop guest blog posts for executive staff to further elevate Akilah’s global voice
  • Draft and manage press releases and public relations materials
  • Manage the media relations process during strategic pitch efforts, including identifying target media outlets and reporters, and writing pitch

 

Requirements: 

  • 1-2 years of fundraising and/or event planning experience; communications and/or social media experience a plus
  • Database management experience, SalesForce/Common Ground experience a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to use Word Press and Squarespace to maintain websites; HTML code experience not required but preferred
  • Educational background in African Studies and/or Foreign Service preferred
  • Fluent verbal and written English and French
  • Strong language abilities in an Asian language (Japanese preferred)
  • Experience in developing communications materials for North American, East African and Asian audiences
  • Experience working remotely with team members based around the world
  • Strong attention to details
  • Ability to multi-task, manage several project simultaneously, prioritize, and meet tight deadlines
  • Must be able to work well both independently with little supervision as well as with others
  • Phenomenal relationship building skills, ability to personally connect with and engage with diverse groups of stakeholders
  • Knowledge of computer software like Microsoft Suite and Photoshop as well as Google platforms like Google Docs and Google Calendar
  • A team player who would thrive in a start up environment
  • Demonstrated interest in international development, women’s empowerment, and education
