RESPONSIBLE FOR: DEVELOPMENT AND DELIVERY OF MUSEUM EDUCATION PROGRAMS

 

REPORTING STAFF: SENIOR GUIDE AND MUSEUM INTERPRETATORS

Organizational Mission

The HKMM is an independent, not for Profit Company responsible for the collection, documentation and presentation of maritime material culture associated with Hong Kong, the South China Sea and the Pearl River Delta.

 

Working in partnership with the Hong Kong Government and members the Hong Kong Ship Owners Association, the HKMM is developing an international standard maritime museum and research centre at Pier 8 for opening in early 2013.

 

Position Objective

The aim of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum is to provide a range of formal and informal lifelong learning opportunities for individuals seeking to engage with maritime issues associated with the Pearl River Delta and the wider South China Sea. By working in partnership with existing Hong Kong based maritime centers of expertise and specialists, HKMM plans to become a community based learning hub that engages with and leads discussion of all aspects of the regions rich maritime heritage.

 

Position Responsibilities

  1. In association with the museums Education Advisory Committee, devise a holistic learning strategy.
  2. In association with relevant staff and consultants, prepare an educational curriculum that contains the necessary resource material to support priority museum learning initiatives.
  3. Assist the museum recruit and train front line staff who will be responsible for interaction with the general public, school groups, professional associations, high profile visitors and specialists
  4. Assist the museum identify and communicate with education market segments, specifically government schools and universities, to build demand for the programs offered by the museum.
  5. Identify and support educational / teaching talent that can be retained by the museum to deliver formal programs, ranging from academic lecturers to artists specializing in early childhood education.
  6. Manage the museums education program in a cost neutral manner through the selective use of fee for service measures and the identification of external funding opportunities.

 

Position Accountabilities

The Education Program Coordinator is accountable for

 

  1. Delivery of the museums educational programming to a standard acceptable to Museum Director and Board of Trustees.
  2. The development and maintenance of positive relationships with the key educational markets being serviced by the museum. 
  3. Provision of leadership to staff and volunteers directly involved with education programming.

 

Qualifications and Experience

This is an important position of trust within HKMM and requires the position holder to interact positively with the Museum Director, senior staff and HKMM stakeholders on a day to day basis.

 

Three to five years’ experience in a similar position, along with proven strong people skills will be highly considered.

 

Adequate written and oral Chinese and English language skills are essential in addition to a relevant degree.

The Directors performance will be reviewed annually by the Museum Director
