Salary: General Disciplined Services (Officer) Pay Scale Point 5 (HK$28,230 per month) to General Disciplined Services (Officer) Pay Scale Point 21 (HK$57,705 per month) [See Note (1)]

Entry Requirements : (a)(i) have a bachelor’s degree from a Hong Kong university, or equivalent; and have met the language proficiency requirements of ‘Level 1’ or above in the two language papers (Use of Chinese and Use of English) in the Common Recruitment Examination (CRE), or equivalent [See Notes (2), (3) & (4)] (Entry Pay : HK$31,865 per month); or (ii) have a bachelor’s degree from a Hong Kong university, or a Diploma from a registered post-secondary college issued after the date of its registration, or a Higher Diploma from a Hong Kong polytechnic university/ polytechnic/ Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education/ technical college, or an accredited Associate Degree from a Hong Kong tertiary institution, or equivalent; and have met the language proficiency requirements of Level 2 or above in Chinese Language and English Language in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE) or the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE), or equivalent [See Note (5)] (Entry Pay : HK$30,070 per month); or (iii) have Level 3 or equivalent or above in five subjects in the HKDSEE, or equivalent; or have Grade E or above in two subjects at Advanced Level in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE) and Level 3/ Grade C or above in three other subjects in the HKCEE, or equivalent; and have met the language proficiency requirements of Level 2 or above in Chinese Language and English Language in the HKDSEE or HKCEE, or equivalent [See Notes (5), (6) & (7)] (Entry Pay : HK$28,230 per month); and (b) be able to pass a physical fitness test; and (c) be able to speak fluent Cantonese and English.

Notes :
(1) The entry pay for the post of Immigration Officer is the General Disciplined Services (Officer) Pay Scale Point 5 (HK$28,230), Point 6 (HK$30,070) and Point 7 (HK$31,865) per month respectively, as commensurate with respective entry qualifications. The information on the maximum pay point is for reference only and it may be subject to changes.
(2) ‘Grade C’ or above and ‘Grade D’ in Chinese Language and Culture or Chinese Language and Literature of the HKALE are accepted as equivalent to ‘Level 2’ and ‘Level 1’ results respectively in the Use of Chinese paper of the CRE. ‘Grade C’ or above and ‘Grade D’ in Use of English of the HKALE, or equivalent, are accepted as equivalent to ‘Level 2’ and ‘Level 1’ results respectively in the Use of English paper of the CRE.
(3) Applicants with an overall band of 6.5 or above with no subtest score below band 6 obtained in the same sitting in the Academic Module of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) within the two-year validity period of the test are considered as having met the English language proficiency requirement (item (a)(i) of entry requirements) of the Immigration Officer post. The IELTS test result must be valid on the starting day of the application period, i.e. 4 April 2014.
(4) Bachelor Degree-holding applicants will be eligible for this pay point if they possess the requisite results in the Use of Chinese and Use of English papers in the CRE or equivalent at the time the offer of appointment is made.
(5) For civil service appointment purpose, ‘Grade C’ and ‘Grade E’ in Chinese Language and English Language (Syllabus B) in the HKCEE before 2007 are accepted administratively as comparable to ‘Level 3’ and ‘Level 2’ respectively in Chinese Language and English Language in the 2007 HKCEE and henceforth.
(6) For civil service appointment purpose, “Attained with Distinction” in Applied Learning subjects (subject to a maximum of two Applied Learning subjects), and Grade C in Other Language subjects in the HKDSEE are accepted as equivalent to Level 3 in the New Senior Secondary subjects in the HKDSEE. “Attained” in Applied Learning subjects (subject to a maximum of two Applied Learning subjects), and Grade E in Other Language subjects in the HKDSEE are accepted as equivalent to Level 2 in the New Senior Secondary subjects in the HKDSEE.
(7) The subjects may include Chinese Language and English Language.

Basic Law Knowledge Assessment : For the purpose of heightening public awareness of the Basic Law (BL) and promoting a culture of learning of the BL in the community, assessment of the BL knowledge will be included in the recruitment for all civil service jobs. Applicants who are invited to attend the Written Examination (Paper II) will be assessed on their BL knowledge through a written test on the same day. The BL test result will be one of the considerations to assess the suitability of an applicant.

Duties : An Immigration Officer is mainly deployed on general, executive and supervisory duties in connection with the enforcement of the immigration, registration of persons, births, deaths and marriage laws of Hong Kong, which include but not limited to the detection of forged documents. (Note: Subject to discipline, required to undergo a full-time induction training, wear uniform, work shifts and may be required to work in an area outside the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.)

Terms of Appointment : New recruits will be appointed on civil service probationary terms for three years, and may be considered for appointment on the prevailing permanent terms upon satisfactory completion of the probationary period.

General Notes :
(a) By the closing day of the application period (i.e. 14 April 2014), applicants should possess the relevant academic qualifications set out in item (a) of the Entry Requirements.
(b) Applicants are required to pass the Written Examination (Paper I) held by the Immigration Department in Hong Kong before they will be further considered for the next selection tier. Detailed arrangement of the examination will be announced in the Immigration Department website in due course. Applicants will normally receive letters of invitation at least one week before the date of examination.
(c) Successful applicants must be able to pass the selection procedures and the pre-employment medical examination including colour perception test.
(d) Civil service vacancies are posts on the civil service establishment. Applicants selected for these vacancies will be appointed on civil service terms of appointment and conditions of service and will become civil servants on appointment.
(e) Applicants must be permanent residents of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region at the time of appointment unless specified otherwise.
