Accounting course all adds up

Opening doors to different career opportunities, accounting has remained a highly coveted specialisation. Demand for qualified accountants is continuously rising, but few know that one does not need a university degree to pursue this career.

The Hong Kong Institute of Accredited Accounting Technicians (HKIAAT) offers the Accredited Accounting Technician (AAT) qualification to sub-degree holders and will be ready to explain the programme at the Education and Recruitment Fair on July 21.

“We provide a unique pathway for people without a university degree who are looking for opportunities to advance their credentials in accounting,” says Professor Stella Cho, president of HKIAAT.

No academic degree or prior accounting experience is needed for the admission of AAT candidates, who can apply starting from the age of 16.

“The AAT qualification provides a practical skills-based approach to acquiring knowledge,” Cho says.

“It’s particularly suitable for two types of people: accounting personnel with operational responsibilities seeking career-advancement opportunities, and accounting sub-degree graduates who want to gain a solid foundation of all-round skills to launch a career in the profession.”

Designed for students who are already in the workforce, the curriculum provides a high degree of flexibility in terms of pace of study, while covering a wide range of business and finance issues.

“Sensitivity to numbers, good communication skills and hard work are the essential qualities required for those who want to pursue a career in accountancy. Last but certainly not least, integrity is everything. Being honest and ethical at work is of utmost importance for accounting personnel at any level,” Cho says.

The AAT qualification opens doors to many career-development opportunities. In a recent survey HKIAAT members revealed that 33 per cent of them obtained a salary increase and/or promotion soon after acquiring the qualification, and 60 per cent said the qualification helped them in job-seeking.

After obtaining the AAT qualification, members can complete the Professional Bridging Examination that in turn will allow them to apply for the qualification programme offered by the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
