Graduates set for bright future

Grand Hyatt Hong Kong is looking for young people who aspire to a career in the food and beverage industry to join its F&B management programme.

With dining establishments at its three hotels - Grand Hyatt Hong Kong in Wan Chai, Hyatt Regency Hong Kong in Tsim Sha Tsui and Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Sha Tin - the group initiated the one-year intensive development programme last year with the aim of attracting highly motivated graduates.

Vida Chow Wai, area director for human resources at Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, says the programme appeals to graduates with a degree or diploma in hospitality or tourism management, and who are passionate about crafting a long-term career in F&B services.

"F&B is relatively not favourable [among graduates] since recruits usually have to work on holidays and on shifts, and stand on their feet all day long," she says.

"They may have to start out as waiters, waitresses or guest services officers. But F&B can be very rewarding and a lot of fun."

As part of the programme, which fast-tracks talented graduates into management positions, trainees rotate at specific outlets for several months, and are involved in special projects such as festive holidays and catering. They also participate in leadership training programmes.

In addition to good academic qualifications and the desire to develop a career in the F&B profession, applicants should demonstrate excellent problem-solving, communications and interpersonal skills.

Last year's intake was relatively small, and included two graduates of hotel management from Polytechnic University, and one existing employee.

However, candidates should not be deterred, as Chan stresses the number depends on the quality of applicants.

Two of the trainees, Patty Sze Hiu-wan and Jason Fong Ka-cheong, say they have broadened their career horizons since they joined the programme last May.

"I hesitated about throwing myself into F&B, as a lot of people told me that it is a very demanding field. But now I am more certain than ever [of my decision]," Sze says.

"We have the opportunity to learn about the day-to-day operations of Western [and] Asian restaurants at Grand Hyatt, hone our management and leadership skills and take part in projects to build up our ability to manage time and tasks."

She adds that she is now more confident, independent, innovative and capable of handling problems.

Fong, meanwhile, finds a career in F&B rewarding as he helps customers plan and enjoy their meals.

Besides F&B trainees, Grand Hyatt is also recruiting for positions such as chef de partie, front office guest services officer, department trainer, airport representative and telephone operator.
