The international edge

Communications and PR manager, teacher assistants
Hong Kong International School

The 500-employee Hong Kong International School (HKIS), based in Repulse Bay and Tai Tam, is recruiting a communications and public relations manager as well as teacher assistants.

The communications manager will join the seven-member advancement office in a challenging role that interacts with stakeholders of one of the best-known international schools in the city. The position calls for a native English speaker who has experience in both communications and journalism.

"I am looking for a strong communicator who has superlative writing skills, ideally earned in a journalism setting," says Erik Dierks, chief advancement officer.

The right person will be involved in both external and internal communications, including media and marketing programmes, and should be familiar with producing print and online publications and website content.

The school is also recruiting teacher assistants who are highly involved in classroom education. They also handle administrative duties, freeing teachers to focus on engaging with students. Teaching assistants come to HKIS with broad experience and may continue their studies, developing their career and making education their vocation.

"Teachers, in particular, need to be able to work in a challenging and rigorous academic environment. They must be collaborative, adaptable, open to change, willing to embrace new ideas and have a strong desire to grow professionally," Dierks says.

The school staff - just like the student body - represent more than 40 nationalities. "Employees need to be able to work in a culturally and religiously diverse environment. Strong interpersonal and diplomatic skills are required to be successful at HKIS," Dierks says.

HKIS offers US-style education grounded in Christianity and respecting the spiritual life of all. "Academic excellence is an extremely important focus, but we extend our programme to areas like character development, spirituality, contributing to society and Chinese culture," Dierks says.

HKIS supports family commitments and promotes a healthy work-life balance. It has excellent wellness facilities such as gyms, swimming pools and a superb sports field.

The school offers a knowledge- and skills-based performance pay system encompassing professional growth, career progression and a competitive compensation package.

"Our focus on professional development and the potential for teachers to significantly boost their compensation in their second year offers a recruiting edge," Dierks says, adding that HKIS offers benefits such as housing subsidy, medical insurance and a retirement plan.
