Know your limits through workplace challenges

Jonathan Fung Pui-lam was offered a two-month internship opportunity at Schroders Hong Kong, after winning the Schroders Hong Kong 40th Anniversary Fund Product Development Competition. The competition was co-organised by Schroders and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He talks to Wong Yat-hei

What’s your academic background?
I am a final-year bachelor’s of business administration student in professional accountancy at CUHK.

How did you start your day?
I was assigned to the department of China intermediary business. Every morning, I scanned market updates.

What did your job entail?
My major tasks included preparing presentation materials and market updates for colleagues, as well as assisting with administrative work. I also had the chance to be part of a forum held on the mainland.

What were the major challenges?
Multitasking – especially when assisting my colleagues in preparation for the Citi Wealth Management Forum in Guiyang. I had to prepare the presentation materials and learn about Schroders’ fund products.

What have you learned about your career? What are your plans?
I had the chance to visit Schroders headquarters in London, and gained a better understanding of the asset management industry in Europe.

Any advice for interns?
Take the initiative to take up challenges at work to identify your strengths and weaknesses. You should also want to learn, so you can adapt quickly and gain experience.
