New vistas for young accountants

Tricor Services

The CPA Australia Career Expo meets the needs of potential employees and employers from different angles, says Shirley Tsang, FCPA (Aust.), executive director at Tricor Services.

Tsang says that one benefit is the chance for participants to see how their careers might initially develop with Tricor.

She says that the company has diverse needs for accountants, given its business-enabler background. It also has experience as a global professional services provider of integrated business, corporate and investor services - which includes accounting and finance-related assignments.

"We don't take part in the expo to simply find candidates," she says. "We participate to let young people know that there are wider options for accountants in finance and related industries."

She adds that attendees can find out more about these options by joining Tricor's eight-to-10-week summer and winter internship programmes.

"We are there to answer questions and provide industry insights that fresh graduates or those who are still studying are unlikely to have," says Tsang.

"We support the event because it gives potential recruits a good opportunity to make comparisons, and talk to experienced people in the business," she adds.

Tsang says that in a formal interview situation, both the job candidate and the employer have preconceived ideas and expectations, but that in an informal setting such as the expo, both parties can be relaxed.

"If we think job candidates are going down the wrong path, we tell them," says Tsang.
