The fashion and textile industries are like style trends - they shift constantly. As a result, they require decisive, intuitive and creative individuals who are able to translate their design ideas into commercial products.

The Institute of Textiles and Clothing at Polytechnic University (PolyU) offers a master of arts programme in fashion and textile design for an in-depth understanding of global fashion trends and requirements.

"The course focuses on design conceptualisation, independent research, creative application and artistic expression. With the provision of a design-focused environment, students will be able to pursue their professional development and acquire knowledge and competencies required in the real world of fashion," says Joe Au, the programme's leader.

The three major design subject areas of the programme cover fashion, knitwear and textiles.

"It fosters a broad range of critical thinking and creative awareness skills. These elements provide the basis for making our graduates highly sought-after design professionals," Au says.

Students need to complete seven core courses and a personal project to graduate.

"The in-depth personal projects allow students to explore issues of design practice, technology and theory," Au says.

Classes are taken at the university's design studio and complemented by factory visits. It is a one-year, full-time programme.
