Assistant Professor in the Department of Media and Communication [Ref. R/312/26]
The Department of Media and Communication is seeking exceptional scholars in communication and related interdisciplinary fields, with particular emphasis on Public Relations and/or Emerging Technologies. Successful candidates are expected to demonstrate strong potential for developing an internationally recognised research programme aligned with the strategic research priorities of CityUHK, together with a strong commitment to teaching and student mentorship.
Duties
The appointees will be expected to:
Teach courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
Supervise research students at the master’s and doctoral levels;
Conduct high-quality and impactful research;
Secure competitive external research funding;
Develop new and interdisciplinary research directions aligned with the strategic priorities of the Department;
Contribute to curriculum development and the design and delivery of new courses; and
Undertake administrative and other academic duties that contribute to the development of the Department, College, and University.
Requirements
Applicants should hold a PhD in Communication or a closely related field from a recognised and appropriately accredited institution.
To align with the strategic development of the Department, candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas will be given priority:
Public Relations – digital public relations, integrated marketing communication, digital and social media communication, organisational communication, crisis and risk communication, relationship management, conflict resolution, ESG/CSR communication, and cross-cultural communication.
Emerging technologies – artificial intelligence and generative AI, AI-mediated communication, computational and data-driven communication, immersive and extended reality (VR/AR/MR), social robots and human–AI interaction, algorithmic and platform-mediated communication, and the social, ethical, and organisational implications of emerging technologies.
Candidates for Assistant Professor should have a solid record of, or evidence of high promise for, scholarly achievements in both teaching and research. The appointees are expected to work collegially and contribute actively to the Department’s teaching and academic development. Preference will be given to candidates who are willing to teach skills-oriented courses and who possess industrial experience or particular expertise in Journalism, TV Production, Digital Media Planning, Artificial Intelligence and Communication, Marketing and Strategic Communication, or Social Media Management.
Salary and Conditions of Service
Remuneration package will be driven by market competitiveness and individual performance. Excellent fringe benefits include gratuity, leave, medical and dental schemes, and relocation assistance (where applicable). Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract.
