Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies

Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences

The Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies (SSPS) is a research-intensive department that prides itself on multi-disciplinary social science research and policy analysis focused on the understanding of social, economic, political and geographical phenomena and educational issues, as well as their implications and challenges for policy making and changes in local, national and global con texts. The department’s faculty are engaged in a range of innovative research areas concerning society, geography, sustainability, governance, urban and social policy, business, finance, entrepreneurship, and education. The department offers degree programmes at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

To further enhance its research and teaching strengths, the Department invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor with research expertise in public policy and public administration, inclusion in the public sector, citizen-state interaction, and advanced social research methods.

The appointee is expected to be an active researcher, able to collaborate with colleagues on public administration and policy-relevant research that leads to publications in leading international journals and to successfully acquire external research funding. The appointee will participate in activities related to teaching, research, knowledge transfer activities, external engagement with policy and community stakeholders, project supervision, curriculum and programme development, and programme and course management at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Applicants should have a PhD in public administration, public policy, or related social science disciplines and preferably post-qualification teaching experience in the higher education sector or other relevant professional qualifications.

Applicants should provide evidence of achievements in research and teaching philosophy, and a statement of teaching and research interests, including their capacity to contribute to teaching in public policy, public administration and management, quantitative and experimental research methods, social policy, and GBA/cross-border governance issues. Professional and research networks conducive to international exchange and collaboration, including with partners in the GBA, would be an advantage. The appointee may be required to travel outside of Hong Kong and undertake work including teaching duties as assigned by the University, where necessary.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract.  Fringe benefits include the University’s Voluntary Contributions to MPF Scheme or a contract-end lump sum payment (totaling up to 15% of the basic salary), leave, medical and dental benefits, and, where applicable, housing benefits.  The appointee will hold a substantive rank of [substantive post] in the University.
