The English Schools Foundation (ESF) is the largest English-medium international school organisation in Hong Kong. Our 22 schools and comprehensive programme of extra-curricular activities bring out the best in every student through a personalised approach to learning and by inspiring curious minds.

Job Description
Job Summary
Discovery College is looking for a Business Manager to lead and manage all non-educational staff and processes in the College, including external contracts; as a member of the College Leadership Team, to contribute to the strategic development of the College.

Main Accountabilities
Business Development and Finance

  • Lead the College’s Business Development strategy, ensuring the College’s finances are sustainable and support the education of students
  • Create and maintain the College’s budget and financial plans and projections
  • Manage budgeting processes, including providing reports, advice and guidance to individual budget-holders
  • Identify and manage additional revenue streams that support the work of the College, including external rentals, sponsorship, corporate and donor support and grant applications
  • As a policy owner, ensure all the College’s policies are up to date and revise them as required according to legal, regulatory, government and foundation- wide requirements, the needs of policy users, and the best interests of the College community
  • Coordinate the purchasing of resources under procurement procedures, including the preparation and administration of major tenders


Systems and Operations

  • Coordinate and develop the College’s administrative systems, including ICT for administrative purposes
  • Manage the site and buildings, including security, maintenance and environment
  • Manage College assets and asset register
  • Manage equipment, inventories, and central College resources including reprographics
  • Coordinate matters of health and safety, including chairing the Health and Safety Committee
  • Manage and develop College lettings and external contracts, including liaison with ESF Educational Services Ltd
  • Manage College resources within delegated authority and budget
  • Lead site development processes on behalf of the College and in liaison, where relevant, with the ESFC Facilities Dept. and other relevant authorities
  • Act as the key liaison for the College’s catering services


Goverance and Compliance

  • Ensure ESF and College policies are implemented effectively and compliance is ensured in all relevant aspects of the College’s operations
  • As an invited, ex-officio member of the School Council, provide reports and advice to the Council on matters related to finance, property, business development etc.
  • Lead the agenda at the Council’s Finance and Property Subcommittee
  • Manage audit processes on behalf of the College, implementing audit recommendations and working towards audit-related compliance targets


Leading Others

  • As a member of the College Leadership Team, contribute to the senior leadership of the College and the development and implementation of College-wide strategic planning
  • Ensure the quality of professional practice through the College’s quality assurance processes
  • Lead the Support Staff sector, ensuring a positive team culture and empowering the Heads of Department as effective middle leaders
  • Manage the Professional Reflection and Development process, and the resourcing of professional learning, for the Support Staff
  • Regularly review Support Staff structure, pay and job roles to ensure alignment with the needs of the College and to promote appropriate career development and staff retention
  • Lead recruitment activities to make appointment to Support Staff roles as required
  • Liaise with other Business Managers, ensuring the College plays a leading role in developing effective, aligned practice across the foundation
  • Represent the College in key areas at ESF, local and international level



  • Perform other duties which may reasonably be assigned from time to time by the Principal

Minimum typical education
Degree with major in business management, accounting or equivalent Post- graduate degree in finance, business management

Minimum typical experience
10-15 years in organisational/financial management role
