University Safety Office

Founded in 1963, The Chinese University of Hong Kong ( is a forward-looking and intellectually vigorous university with the mission to be a first-class comprehensive research university, regionally and internationally. Reporting to a Pro-Vice-Chancellor/Associate Vice-President, the Director of University Safety Office oversees and advises the maintenance of safety functions of all departments/units and research institutes in the University. The University Safety Office is committed to enhancing occupational safety and health, through the main strategy of cultivating a positive safety culture. The Office engages in providing advisory services on biological, chemical and radiation hazards, ensuring legislative compliance, conducting safety inspections, liaising with campus security/fire services, and reviewing and promulgating relevant policies. Liaison with the Environmental Protection Department, Labour Department, the Tertiary Institutions Safety Advisory Group and external safety consultants is also maintained through the Office.

The appointee will be responsible for providing leadership and direction in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the University’s safety management programme to ensure a safe and secure environment in the University. Other key duties include serving on Safety Advisory Committees; ensuring workplace safety in adherence to the relevant regulations in daily operation and providing professional advice for safety related aspects.

Applicants should have (i) a good University degree; (ii) recognized professional qualifications in safety and occupational hygiene (preferably with level 2 of CIEH or equivalent safety qualifications); (iii) extensive safety experience, at least ten years of which at supervisory level in a responsible position for the environmental health and safety of a large organization, preferably in academia settings; (iv) good leadership and organizational ability and a high level of management skills; (v) proficiency in both Chinese and English; and (vi) expertise in safety management systems.

Appointment to the Directorship will initially be made on contract basis for up to three years, renewable subject to mutual agreement. Applications will be accepted until the post is filled.
