DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING 

Half-time Teaching Fellow in Technical English (Ref. 20021101)

[Appointment period: from March 2020 to September 2020] 

Duties 

The appointee will be required to: 

(a) assist subject lecturers to mark the assignments with English writing components; 

(b) identify weak students through their assignments and to meet the students concerned individually; 

(c) provide consultation hours to all undergraduate students, in particular those final year students working on the final year projects (FYP) and the posters; 

(d) assess the FYP posters and select the top ones for a presentation and competition; 

(e) participate in the development and delivery of technical English enhancement programmes, such as writing workshop and oral presentation on engineering topics; and 

(f) perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Department or his/her delegates. 

 

Qualifications 

Applicants should: 

(a) have a first degree preferably in a science or engineering discipline and a master’s degree preferably in English Linguistics, Applied Linguistics or English Teaching and Learning or a related discipline; 

(b) have at least three years of post-qualification tertiary teaching experience and/or relevant professional, practical or industrial experience; 

(c) be highly proficient in written and spoken English; and 

(d) have solid English teaching experience or extensive experience in writing effective technical reports and making effective presentations. 

Preference will be given to native English speakers and/or those who have a deep understanding of the English problems of engineering students in Hong Kong.
