Global Legal plays an important role in protecting the Group’s reputation by helping to future-proof the organisation through robust legal risk and issue advisory. Responsible for providing comprehensive legal advice to senior management and all global businesses and functions, the team offers a diverse range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all countries and territories in which our businesses operate. 

We are currently seeking a high caliber professional to join our team as Senior Legal Counsel, Competition Law .

 

In this role, you will

  • Provide robust, balanced and forward looking expert legal advice and proactive guidance on competition law issues to the four Global Business Lines and Global Functions in Hong Kong and Asia Pacific region
  • Assist with the management of competition regulatory or internal investigations wherever in Asia Pacific as they arise
  • Proactively mitigate risks and future proof the business by helping with the implementation, monitoring and refinement of an effective and forward looking programme of competition risk assessment, management and mitigation activities in Hong Kong and Asia Pacific region, working closely with other members of the Group Competition Law team
  • Identify and capture emerging regulatory trends and internal and external lessons learned in relation to competition law and ensure that experience is shared with the Asia Pacific region and the Group and opportunities are taken to equip the Group with forward looking guidance
  • Actively participate in a Group wide competition law practice group
  • Work as an integrated member of the wider HSBC legal team
  • Ensure that competition risks and issues are identified and appropriate action taken as early as possible
  • Be proactive in the provision of legal support and in the identification of future risks and trends, providing actionable insights to the businesses
  • Maintain and develop positive and professional working relationships with all legal team members and members of business departments with whom the lawyer has contact
  • Able to navigate large and complex organisations and stakeholder groups
  • Provide legal services in a cost effective manner
 

To be successful in this role, you should meet the following requirements

  • Qualified lawyer
  • Strong technical legal skills and in depth knowledge of competition law in a well established regime
  • Significant experience of a broad spectrum of competition law concepts, with an emphasis on behavioural issues, horizontal and vertical agreements and abuse of dominance, and investigation management as opposed to mergers.
  • Solid judgment and ability to evaluate risk in a commercially focused way.
  • Demonstrable ability to analyse the competition law implications of business proposals with relatively little supervision, including problem solving ability.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to translate complex legal issues into easy to understand briefings.
  • Demonstrably strong interpersonal skills including in particular team working and influencing skills.
  • In house experience will be an advantage
