The new Division of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas (EMIA) is an academic unit to be established under the Interdisciplinary Programs Office on 1 July 2021.  EMIA envisions to foster the agile development of new education programs; contribute to identifying emerging cutting edge and niche topics, such as Artificial Intelligence, Digital Media and Creative Arts; and coordinate interdisciplinary education and research initiatives within and outside HKUST for agile development of emerging areas.  The new Division will serve as a cross-disciplinary platform facilitating scholars from different departments, campuses, and universities to incubate and drive research agenda for new and emerging interdisciplinary areas.

 

The appointee will primarily teach and drive the Extended Major Program and other educational programs and initiatives of the new Division.  Major responsibilities include:

 

(i)         teaching courses in Design Thinking at undergraduate and postgraduate level;

(ii)       driving the implementation of the new Extended Major Program and coordinating with different units in both Clear Water Bay and Guangzhou campuses on course offerings, seminars, capstone projects, and enrichment activities under EMIA;

(iii)        liaising with industry, NGOs, and government organizations on collaboration of capstone projects;

(iv)     providing academic advice to students taking EMIA programs and courses, and handling student studies matters;

(v)        assisting in new educational initiatives of EMIA; and

(vi)       performing other duties as assigned by the Head of EMIA.  

 

Applicants should be dynamic and energetic persons who have a master’s or doctoral degree, preferably in Design Thinking, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Media and Creative Arts, or other interdisciplinary areas.  Preference will be given to those who have (i) experience in teaching Design Thinking courses at university level; (ii) solid experience in running student capstone projects with companies, and (iii) substantive network with industry, NGOs or government organizations.    The candidates should have a strong passion in teaching and education; and a commitment to nurture students with emerging technologies and innovations.  (Duration: 2 years, renewable)

 

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits including annual leave, medical and dental benefits will be provided. A gratuity will be payable upon successful completion of contract.
