PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER - European toys buying office / sourcing office (TST)

Role Mission

• Translate toy concepts into technically sound, commercially viable, and production-ready products.

• Work closely with overseas buying teams, suppliers, and factories to achieve agreed quality, cost, safety, and timeline objectives.

• Identify and resolve product development and manufacturing issues proactively to support smooth product launches.

Role Summary

• Based in the Hong Kong sourcing office, you will manage the technical and commercial development of toy products from concept approval through to production readiness.

• The role will work closely with the buying team at European headquarters and act as a key liaison between overseas stakeholders, suppliers, and factory partners in China.

• Reporting locally to the General Manager of the Hong Kong office, the successful candidate will coordinate product specifications, samples, costings, testing, compliance, manufacturing feasibility, and launch preparation.

• The role requires strong hands-on experience in toy product development, factory communication, technical problem-solving, project coordination, and supplier management.

• Regular communication with overseas colleagues, suppliers, internal stakeholders, and factory partners will be required.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage toy product development projects from concept approval through to production readiness.

• Translate product concepts and design requirements into clear technical specifications for suppliers and factories.

• Work directly with factories and suppliers to develop products that meet agreed specifications, target costs, quality standards, and commercial objectives.

• Assess product designs and prototypes for manufacturability, functionality, durability, safety, and cost effectiveness.

• Support the buying team in sourcing new products, evaluating factory capabilities, and identifying new supplier opportunities.

• Maintain accurate product costings, quotations, bills of materials, and development information across the supplier base.

• Coordinate sample development, engineering samples, prototype reviews, and product improvements throughout the development process.

• Identify technical, quality, safety, and manufacturing risks and work proactively with suppliers to resolve them.

• Investigate product development issues, identify root causes, and implement practical corrective actions with factories.

• Challenge suppliers to improve product quality, functionality, packaging, manufacturing efficiency, and cost effectiveness.

• Review production methods, materials, components, tooling, and assembly processes to improve product performance and manufacturability.

• Manage development timelines and ensure key milestones are achieved on schedule.

• Coordinate product specifications, technical drawings, product data, development records, and other project documentation.

• Work closely with QA teams, testing laboratories, suppliers, and factories to support product testing, compliance, and certification requirements.

• Review test results and follow up with suppliers on failed tests, product modifications, and corrective actions.

• Support compliance with applicable international toy safety standards and customer-specific requirements.

• Assist with packaging structure, packaging specifications, artwork, labelling, and instruction development with suppliers and internal stakeholders.

• Coordinate pre-production activities and ensure products are ready for mass production and shipment.

• Monitor initial production and provide technical support to factories when required.

• Build strong relationships with supplier partners and contribute to long-term supplier capability and performance improvement.

• Provide regular project updates to overseas buying teams, the General Manager, and relevant internal stakeholders.

• Manage multiple product development projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Ideal Candidate

• Degree or higher diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Industrial Design, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline.

• At least 5 years of experience in product development, product engineering, sourcing, merchandising, or manufacturing within the toys or consumer products industry.

• Hands-on experience working with factories and suppliers in China or other Asian markets.

• Strong understanding of toy product development, engineering, sampling, tooling, materials, and manufacturing processes.

• Practical experience in translating product concepts into technical specifications and production-ready products.

• Good commercial sense, with the ability to balance cost, quality, functionality, manufacturability, and speed to market.

• Experience in product testing, toy safety, compliance, certification, and quality requirements is highly advantageous.

• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify technical risks and drive effective solutions.

• Excellent project management, coordination, documentation, and organizational skills.

• Strong supplier communication, negotiation, and relationship management capabilities.

• Fluent written and spoken English is essential.

• Cantonese and/or Mandarin language skills are an advantage.

• Passionate about toys, product innovation, engineering, and bringing new ideas to market.

• Proactive, detail-oriented, curious, and able to manage multiple projects independently.

• Willing to travel occasionally to China.
