We are now looking for a suitable person to fill the following position in the School of Arts and Social Sciences:

Temporary Research Assistant I (3-month contract) (R6977) (A&SS) (Ref: 26001QO)

Major Duties and Responsibilities

The appointee shall mainly assist the research team in a research project “Performer Agency and Systemic Coherence under AI Mediation: A Practice-Based Study with Fabricated Instruments in Spatial Audio” (R6977). The appointee will be responsible mainly for the following:

• Supporting the team in conducting literature reviews and reference research related to performer agency, AI-mediated performance systems, and spatial audio for research dissemination; 

• Collecting and organizing data, including rehearsal audio and video recordings, reflective logs, and technical documentation for analysis;

• Assisting the Principal Investigator/supervisors in the preparation, coordination, and execution of research studies and artistic experiments; 

• Participating in integration, testing, and documentation of an interactive performance system combining fabricated instruments, neural audio synthesis (RAVE, Somax2), and spatial audio (Spat);

• Serving as the primary performer-evaluator in structured rehearsal sessions, and assisting in the planning and organization of the public research demonstration;

• Preparing materials for publications, exhibitions, and other research outcome deliverables; and

• Undertaking other ad-hoc research and administrative activities as instructed by the Principal Investigator.
   
   

Candidates

Candidates should possess the following qualifications, experience and competence:

• A Master’s degree or above in Music Performance, Music Technology, Sound Art, or a related discipline;

• Demonstrated experience in at least two of the following: live performance with Max/MSP, spatial audio, digital fabrication, or live electronic music performance systems;

• Strong ability and knowledge in music composition, sound design, spatial audio, or audio programming; 

• Preferred understanding of neural audio synthesis, spatial audio technologies, and art-technology integration;

• Candidates who have the intention to pursue a research postgraduate degree are preferred;

• Proven record in academic publication, exhibition, or artistic presentation in the field of music, sound, performing arts, or media art;

• Experience in Max/MSP, spatial audio tools (e.g. IRCAM Spat), or other audio programming and music software;

• Strong organisational and planning skills, good interpersonal and communication skills, and proficiency in computer applications (MS Office, document editing, etc.);

• Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work independently under tight deadlines;

• Professional communication skills for handling correspondence, coordination, and documentation; and

• Good command of written and spoken English and Chinese.

Successful candidate will be appointed on a temporary full-time contract.  Benefits will be provided in accordance with the statutory provisions.
