Every day, journalists at the New York Times report more than 200 stories from dozens of countries around the world on topics ranging from major international events to the best way to roast a chicken. Those stories are read, listened to and watched by millions of users across our web, mobile as well as print products.
We are looking for a Software Engineer to join our Technology team as a Software Engineer in Hong Kong. Our team builds the tools that help to continue to be able to print and deliver the paper, improve the productivity and finally improve the reader experience. We also manage the infrastructure that supports the applications and have plans to grow out our reach to include more modern, novel platforms for user experience in the near future.
Our team is constantly looking to explore new technologies to interact or facilitate the interaction of our employees with our customers in a meaningful, effective way.
The Technology team is a small squad with huge impact. In addition to developing and maintaining the infrastructure behind The New York Times International Edition, we work closely with other Engineering teams to optimize development processes, keep code efficient, and solve the business problems.

In this role, you can expect to:
- Recommend solutions that best align with our product and business goals, as well as the secure storage and replication of our data.
- Learn and practice about infrastructure on AWS.
As a person who is a good fit for this role, you're expected to show:
- Programming and troubleshooting skills. We don’t expect you to know everything but we expect you to learn quickly.
- Fluency in Java and at least one front end framework such as React. Knowledge of C, lambda or Go is welcome.
- An understanding of cloud based deployments on Amazon Web Services or a will to learn.
- Knowledge of basic SQL; Oracle or Postgres preferred
- Experience with either git or mercurial, and maybe automating deployments.
- Passion about quality, performance and reliability of systems. You'll have to show a high degree of empathy for existing solutions and issues. The New York Times is quite modern in many ways but is also prone to having issues that a 165 year old organization may have - including legacy systems and processes. There are many things to improve.
- Thoughtfulness, clearness, and persuasiveness in writing and in person. You'll need to show an understanding of the tradeoffs between technical, analytical and product needs and a preference for solutions that take all of these needs into account.
- Sensitivity to security and privacy concerns and have a basic understanding of GDPR & PCI requirements.
- A bias towards helping people. Many teams will rely upon you for help to build their systems.
