Post Title:                Assistant Librarian

Responsible to:      School Librarian

Campus:                  Pok Fu Lam

Function:                  To assist the librarian in the day to day running of the school libraries primarily based                                     at the Preparatory School, Pok Fu Lam but with the flexibility to move between all                                           campuses


Duties and Responsibilities

To assist the librarian in the day to day running of the school libraries primarily based at the Preparatory School, Pok Fu Lam but with the flexibility to move between all campuses

  • To supervise students in the library
  • To catalogue resources for the library
  • To manage the book collection: maintain/weed/select new stock
  • To foster a positive relationship with staff and teachers to ensure collection is relevant to curriculum and school requirements
  • To undertake circulation duties using the OPAC system (Oliver)
  • To manage overdue notices and collection of payments for lost books
  • To manage a team of 20+ library parent volunteers
  • To help plan, create, and deliver library sessions to classes each week, from Reception through Year 6 using the Library Scheme of Works as a guide
  • To guide and educate students and staff in the use of the library, and the library catalogue
  • To instruct and educate students and staff in the use of the library’s digital services, including Britannica Online and the Wheelers e-book platform
  • To proactively encourage reading by helping students identify appealing genres and subjects and recommending reading matter
  • To assist with, co-ordinate and deliver the annual Book Week activities, and other reading programmes or library activities throughout the year
  • To conceive and create new library displays each term
  • To manage invited guest speakers/authors targeting specific curriculum units
  • To advise parents and teachers, when consulted, on reading material for individual students
  • To lead the Battle of the Books (Prep) extra-curricular activity
  • To collaborate with teachers and other staff members to promote use of library and utilisation of the resources in the curriculum which includes attending staff meetings when relevant.
