Do MBAs still make sense in 2019?

Graduated with a computer science degree, I'd worked in a large corporation for a couple of years before joining a small company and managing its IT department. Now that I've been working here for several years, I realise that I can't really see much future in my role and am wondering whether an MBA might open up more opportunities for management roles. However, some colleagues tell me that pursuing an MBA for better a career prospect is an outdated concept, and that I should rely on my hands-on experience instead to get a job in a bigger company. Are MBAs really a waste of time? Does working in a bigger company offer more opportunities?
