Master of Social Science Education (Greater China Studies)
Hong Kong Institute of Education

The HKIEd offers a programme leading to a master of social science education (Greater China Studies) to teachers who want to enhance their students' knowledge of the mainland.

Professor Sonny Lo Shiu-hing, programme coordinator, says mainland studies have been incorporated in the local curriculum but teachers need to upgrade their knowledge of China's history, society and other topics. Secondary and associate diploma teachers who teach liberal studies and general studies will benefit from the course, Lo says.

The programme takes an interdisciplinary approach to educating students. "The course covers politics, economics and culture to give students a clear and well-rounded view of what is happening on the mainland," Lo says.

The programme is suitable for non-governmental organisation workers, human resources personnel, project managers, editors or publishers who are working in Greater China and other parts of Asia.

Lectures are held on weekday evenings and weekends, and may take place at HKIEd's Tai Po campus or at the town centre branch in Tai Kok Tsui. Full-time students can finish the course in one year, while part-time students can complete it in two years. Applicants should have an honours degree in disciplines related to arts, humanities, social sciences or inter-disciplinary studies.
